While there are many TV shows worth watching these days such as "Mad Men," "Glee," and "The Big Bang Theory," there is also plenty of garbage. But there are also even more great shows that fly entirely under the radar.Something completely different has been playing on PBS Sunday nights for almost 40 years, largely unnoticed by most people, especially college students. "Masterpiece" is a series of TV drama specials produced by the BBC and WGBH here in Boston. On air since January 1971, it is the oldest running weekly primetime drama series in the country.

The series is divided up into three sections: "Masterpiece Classics," "Masterpiece Mystery!", and "Masterpiece Contemporary." They air in the spring, summer and fall respectively. The specials air weekly on Sunday nights at 9 p.m., and are worth staying up a bit late to watch. The acting is sophisticated and the plots are intriguing.

The "Masterpiece Mystery!" is beginning to wrap up for the season. Last week was the final showing of the Kurt Wallander mysteries, based on the wildly popular novels by Swedish author Henning Mankell.

Starting next week, "Masterpiece" is beginning a Sherlock Holmes special, set in the modern day starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Holmes, with Martin Freeman ("The Office" UK) as Dr. Watson.

The Sherlock special is set to air Oct. 24 through Nov. 7. Don't miss out.
