Karzai refuses peace talks with Taliban

On October 6, 2011

President Hamid Karzai said that ‚Äúhis government will no longer hold peace talks with Taliban. After former President Rabbani entered negotiations with Taliban and was killed by a suicide bomber, Karzai said that the killing made him decide to focus on dialogue with Pakistan. He added that no partners will be welcomed in this dialogue. However, the US president has called Pakistanis to take militant action with the Haqqani network. The Haqqani network is based in Pakistan and has close relations with Taliban. It is thought to have introduced suicide bombing to Afghanistan. Pakistan's foreign minister replied saying that the US could lose Pakistan as an ally if it continued to publicly accuse Islamabad of supporting militants. This has caused demonstrations to start in the streets of Pakistan where people showed the world their rejection of what the US said and their refusal to the idea of attacking Haqqani.
